A Costume
David Nixon’s action packed new production
fuses first class ballet with stunning costumes and this is
where you can help.
Costumes ranging in price from £250 to £1000
are being created. Click here
to read about the fabulous designs you could help bring to
the stage; and it’s not just costumes that
we need – the production wouldn’t be the same
without the swords which the Musketeers use, each sword costs
£350 – and we need 11 of them!
Every pound counts – a £5 donation will pay for
an ostrich feather or a metre of lace; £1 will buy a
reel of cotton and we will use in the region of 1000 reels!

Masquerade Ball
The Grand Finale of David Nixon’s The Three Musketeers
is a Masquerade Ball held at The Royal Palace. For this
scene both the men and women will be dressed in some
of the most flamboyant and colourful costumes NBT has
ever produced. As was common at the period the ball
has a theme, for our ball the costumes have all been
designed to represent Birds.
Women
The Women will be wearing jewelled headdresses crowned
with black ostrich feathers intermingled with coloured
fabrics, bodices made from Brocade (a fabric interwoven
with metallic colours that will be eye-catching under
stage lights) and hooped skirts with a lower tier made
from many different colours and a top tier of rich blue/gold.
These beautiful costumes cost £1000 each.
Men
The Men’s outfits really embrace the Ball’s
theme. 160 pieces of organza in 9 different shades of
purples, blues and reds will create stunning ‘wings’.
These wings will be attached to Gold Brocade jackets,
pleated to give the appearance of feathers. Each Man’s
outfit costs £750.
Masks
A Masquerade Ball would be nothing without the masks!
The Women’s masks cover the eyes in a simple but
elegant metallic design. The Men’s masks really
complete the outfit by adding Bird features including
a beak. Masks cost from £50-£100 each.

Rehearsal Scene
The first act of the production will end with the characters
‘rehearsing’ a ball. For this scene, to
contrast with the end of Act 2, a very simple, natural
look has been chosen. The company will be wearing period
pieces in a simple cream colour.
Women
The Women will be wearing a three-piece outfit. The
main feature is a full cotton skirt, made in two layers
from 10 metres of fabric. Using that much fabric will
make it move gracefully during the ballet but means
each skirt costs around £220 for the materials
alone! A fitted bodice and a silk blouse complete the
costume. Each of these full outfits costs £500
Men
During this scene the Men will be wearing very clean,
unfussy costumes. A simple Frill shirt, with subtle
touches like lace-trimmed cuffs, is worn with knee length
breeches and a jerkin. You can sponsor one of these
outfits for £250.

Musketeers and Guards!
Tabards
The Musketeers and Richelieu’s Guards will all
be wearing authentic Tabards, blue for the King and
red for the Cardinal. Made from luxurious cotton velvet
with a silver and gold trim, they display a French cross
and Fleur-de-lis motif and have a lace ivory collar.
Each Tabard costs £200.
Boots
All the men in the production will be wearing leather
boots, specially designed to fit in with the style of
the period whilst allowing the Dancers to move freely.
Thigh and Knee high boots cost £200-£300.
Hats
Porthos, Athos and Aramis wouldn’t be the same
without a hat to complete their famous look but it’s
not just them that need headgear. To stay true to the
period all the guards will be wearing similar hats as
will many dancers in the corps de ballet. Hats cost
around £150.
