David Drew MBE
Born: London, England.
Trained/Educated: Westbury School of Dancing,
Bristol; Royal Ballet School.
Companies/Organisations: Royal Ballet – promoted to
Soloist (1961) and to Principal Dancer (1974). On his 65th
birthday he was retired by the ROH but is currently appearing
there as a Guest Artist.

Giselle; Von Rothbart, Swan Lake. His created roles include:
Gaoler, Manon; The Captain, Different Drummer; ‘Bay’
Middleton, Mayerling; Demetrius, The Dream; Max Merx, Isadora;
G.B. Shaw, Grand Tour; The Master, Rituals.
TV appearances include: Farmer Thomas, La
Fille Mal Gardee; Basilio, Don Quixote, and Kostchei, The
Firebird, during this transmission he was interviewed, reminiscing
over his experience recreating Les Noces with Bronislava Nijinska.
He has been privileged to partner among many others: Margot
Fonteyn, Sylvie Guilleme, Gelsey Kirkland, Antoinette Sibley,
Natalia Makarova, Lynne Seymour, Altinai Asylmuratove, Marcia
Haydee, Monica Mason, Tamara Roja. With this experience he
taught Graduate Class pas de deux at the Royal Ballet Upper
School (1976 – 1999).
David has choreographed several operas and musicals and five
ballets for the then Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet. He
assisted Norman Morrice in the running of the Choreographic
Composition Course at the Royal Ballet School (1986 –
1999). Since his retirement he has specialised in producing
scenarios for full-length ballets and has a life-long interest
in making ballet more accessible to a wider audience.
Personal: He
is Founder President of the Ballet Association. In 2006 David
was awarded the MBE for ‘services to dance’. He
is married to actress June Ritchie who he met when choreographing
a Sandy Wilson musical in 1971.
